Jets Roundup

The New York Jets have signed Tight End Kellen Winslow Jr. to a one year deal after the three day mini camp wrapped up on Friday. Winslow was invited to try out for the team at the mini camp with the Jets being very thin at the tight end position. Currently on the Jets roster, the tight ends under contract are Jeff Cumberland, blocking tight end Konrad Rueland, and former Aussie rugby player Hayden Smith. The team’s number one tight end of a year ago Dustin Keller signed as a free agent with the Dolphins.

During the mini camp, coach Rex Ryan, in his own words was “very excited to see Winslow in action.” “He shows athleticism, and his ability to catch the football just stands out”. The knock on Winslow has always been about him staying on the field. He has battled many injuries through out his career, which began as the number one draft choice of the Cleveland Browns in 2004. If Winslow can stay healthy, this is a great move for the Jets. It will give their quarterbacks a main target to throw to when they need a key first down.

Elsewhere on the Jets, Wide out Santonio Holmes is still recovering from his season ending foot injury from a year ago. The injury, which is called lisfranic (separation of the joints in the foot) is still keeping Holmes off the practice field during the team’s mini camps. He is rehabbing with the trainers and Holmes target date to get back is the first day of training camp next month. Coach Ryan, stated”I will not rush him and we might put him on the pup (physically unable to perform list) until he is fully ready”. This a tough injury to come back from and Holmes has two screws in his foot to keep it stable. He is doing well in rehab, and if things go well, the quarterbacks, whomever it might be to start the season will be much better off having Holmes and now Winslow as targets.

Winslow has had some stats but couple strong tackles to knees will bring him down unfortunately.

On a good note, Konrad Reuland is a sleeper in that everyone on East Coast thinks he is blocking TE when in actuality, he is top receiving tight end coming from Niners- they were concerned about his blocking abilities but Reuland proved this wrong last season with 399 snaps, 299 on offense with 16 targets and 11 catches and balance on Special teams.

Looking forward to pads coming on July 24-
