The date was October 23rd, 2000, the location – Giants Stadium. In a Monday Night Football matchup that would go down as one of the greatest NFL games to ever to be played, the New York Jets met the Miami Dolphins, taking a beating at home to the tune of a 30-13 Dolphins lead going into the fourth quarter.

Vinny Testaverde threw four touchdown passes in that quarter, forcing overtime and eventually leading the Jets to a victory in a game now known as the Monday Night Miracle. This week’s Monday Night Football matchup will feature a rematch of the epic battle between the division rivals.

The New York Jets come into the game after losing all three games on a road trip that brought them to Oakland, Baltimore, and New England. Struggling to find their identity and reignite the passion that brought them success the last two seasons, they hope to right the course and take advantage of the winless Miami Dolphins.

Despite talent across the board on offense, Gang Green has failed to consistently move the ball downfield and has seen a lack of production from both the run and pass game. They had seven three-and-outs last week against what was a league-worst Patriots defense entering the game.

“I don’t see us losing our confidence,” Ryan said. “I think maybe people outside of that room are going to lose confidence. We’re not. I’m confident in the fact that I see signs of us getting better. We have to, obviously. This is a critical game for us Monday night, and that’s where our focus is going to be.”

Rex Ryan vowed that ground-and-pound would be his preferred style of offense when he took over as head coach two years ago, but the Jets have strayed from that through the first five games of the season. Their 76.2 rushing yards per game average is the second worst in the league, better than only the Tennessee Titans.

The Miami Dolphins are in trouble, needing a win off of their bye after losing the first four games of the season. Quarterback Chad Henne is out for the rest of the season after separating his throwing shoulder in Miami’s last game against the San Diego Chargers. Former Panthers quarterback Matt Moore will take the helm Monday night with hopes to bring some life to the offense.

Unfortunately for Moore, he may not have his best option at wide receiver for most of Monday’s game, and not because of an injury. Brandon Marshall commented this week that he is planning on getting ejected in the second quarter for fighting, mentioning Bart Scott or Antonio Cromartie as possible opponents.

“I’m not joking. I’m serious,” Marshall told the South Florida Sun Sentinel. ”They’re going to fine me. It’s probably going to be like a $50,000 fine. But that quarter and a half that I’m out there, I’m going to play like a monster.”

Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano is still confident that the young quarterback will be able to have success as a starter. “He’s been in the huddle as a starting quarterback before. I think the guy has good leadership qualities. He’s run off a string of four or five wins up there in Carolina. He’s a confident guy,” Sparano said.

Miami will need to find a rhythm on offense quickly Monday if they hope to compete with the Jets defense. One thing is for certain, both of these teams need a win tomorrow night. In my opinion, because of home field advantage, Miami’s quarterback situation, and this team’s bounce-back ability over the last few years, I predict a convincing New York Jets win.

In addition, the Jets will be inducting four Jets Legends into their Ring of Honor.  Click here for our story.
