In the Miami Dolphins last game against the Buffalo Bills, Jarvis Landry was penalized for an illegal crackback block against Bills safety Aaron Williams. Days after the game, Landry was fined $24,309 by the NFL because of the unnecessary hit.
On Wednesday, Landry spoke to the media for the first time about the play against Williams and his initial reaction to getting fine.
“I didn’t have a reaction,” Landry said.
Landry also told reporters that he would appeal the fine against him handed down by the league.
“Something I will get with my agent about,” Landry said. “Obviously, it isn’t much I can do, but it is good to appeal to those.”
Because of the play made by Landry, Williams suffered a neck injury. He was taken to a South Florida hospital for further evaluation of his head and neck before traveling home with the Bills.
This is the second straight season Williams has suffered a neck injury and his NFL career is very much in jeopardy. Buffalo hasn’t officially ruled Williams out for the remainder of the season, but Bills coach Rex Ryan said he is out indefinitely. Ryan also called Landry’s play dirty and deliberate.
Landry said the play would not have any influence on how he plays the game.
“As far as my target area, yes, but my physically no,” Landry said. “In this game, there are risks and it comes with injuries as well. You never play the game to hurt somebody, but inside the game, things happen.”
Landry said he has not reached out to Williams, but didn’t rule out talking with him somewhere in the future.
Last week, Williams’ father, Anthony, said his son would wait until the offseason to determine whether he will continue his playing career. Doctors ruled out Aaron Williams having a concussion.
In 2015, Williams injured his neck diving head first in attempts to tackle New England Patriots receiver Julian Edelman. Williams then missed the Bills final 11 games of the season with a neck injury.
