The Miami Dolphins QB Chad Henne will need surgery to repair a shoulder separation and was placed on injured reserve today.
In addition, the Dolphins signed backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels. Rosenfels was placed on IR by the Giants over the summer but was released by the Giants earlier this week. Rosenfels was previously with the Dolphins from 2002 through 2005. He has also played with the Redskins, Texans and Vikings.
Rosenfels brings some solid experience to the team, although not a lot of time as a starter. He has been in the league since 2001, but has started only 12 games. He has 4,156 yards passing in his career, with a 62.5% completion percentage with 30 TDs and 29 INTs.
With the Dolphins down to Matt Moore as the only quarterback remaining on the roster, the move to bring in Rosenfels fills a huge need.
There were reports yesterday that the Dolphins were pursuing former Jaguars QB David Garrard, but the Dolphins were unwilling to guarantee Garrard’s salary for the full season. Given the Dolphins current status, sitting at 0-4 with only one QB on the roster, an available quarterback who started last year and has over 16,000 career passing yards would seem to be an ideal fit.
