The public drama between Hank Williams Jr and ESPN regarding Williams’ political comments is over – well almost. The musical introduction of “Monday Night Football” by the country singer will not be heard anymore, but who made that call is still unclear.
”After reading hundreds of e-mails, I have made MY decision,” Williams said in a statement to The Associated Press. ”By pulling my opening Oct 3rd, You (ESPN) stepped on the Toes of The First Amendment Freedom of Speech, so therefore Me, My Song, and All My Rowdy Friends are OUT OF HERE. It’s been a great run.”
ESPN is claiming it was their decision and released the following statement: ”We have decided to part ways with Hank Williams Jr. We appreciate his contributions over the past years. The success of Monday Night Football has always been about the games and that will continue.”
The song had been part of MNF since 1989. ESPN said for the remainder of the season it will follow a format similar to this past weeks Monday night game by running a pre-game preview.
Williams received support from people of all political views that were interested in protecting free speech.
It seems that at the end of the day you have the right to speak your mind, as long know one hears you, when you work for ESPN.
