David Wilson has been living his dream since his name was called in the first round of the 2012 draft to play for the New York Giants. That dream for him has come to an end as of this Monday after meeting with Doctor Frank Cammisa, who performed his disc removal and spinal fusion surgery in January. Rather than looking at this news as a disappointment, Wilson views it as another opportunity.
“I don’t want anybody to feel sorry for me or pity me,” he said. “I lived my dream. A lot of people only get to dream their dream. I lived that dream. Now I have a chance to dream another dream and live that, too.”
The Giants team doctor Russell Warren explained the reasoning behind Wilson’s wise decision to call it quits. “David has diffuse cervical stenosis. He had a disk removed and a fusion in January,” said Warren. “In light of last week’s episode of symptoms, sensory and motor, Frank and I both told David he should not play football anymore. We let David know that by playing he would be putting himself at risk for more episodes like last week or perhaps something more serious.”
Wilson’s optimism in regards to his situation is certainly admirable. At eight years old, he told his father he wanted to play in the NFL. As far as Wilson is concerned, he has accomplished his lifelong dream and he’s now being blessed with a chance to pursue another dream. He has merely only finished chapter one according to his Instagram he blasted out yesterday.
At age 8 I told my #Dad I wanted to play football in THE NFL at this point in my life I have done… http://t.co/z7grtbJHWp
He said, “I’m thankful that I can literally walk away from the game and that I am healthy and capable of doing the same things I have done all my life, except play football. I always try to find the positive in everything. This morning, I didn’t hear what I wanted to hear, but I expected what they told me could be a possibility. I had played out both scenarios in my mind.”
