Game Notes: Washington Redskins Fall To The Minnesota Vikings 29-26

The Washington Redskins (3-6) ended their two game winning streak Sunday losing to the Minnesota Vikings (4-5), 29 – 26.

Below are our game notes:

The Okay:

  • I’m going to mention Robert Griffin III first because he wasn’t bad and he didn’t play an ugly game. However, he did have a few bad plays and couldn’t pull out a game winning or tying drive. So I wouldn’t label him good either. He had a “mixbag” game, as Head Coach Jay Gruden said. But I think everyone should be more optimistic about the future of Griffin after this game. I liked the way he played from the pocket. I saw more of the good plays that made him rookie of the year in 2012 than the hesitant — probably not mentally ready — type of play he had in 2013. Griffin made a couple plays that only he can make. He did an excellent job throwing deep balls to DeSean Jackson. However, he did have an ugly interception and under-threw Pierre Garcon on a crucial fourth down attempt late in the game. Overall, for a guy who has been away from football for so long — he played a decent game. He played a lot better than people expected against a defense that by no means is average. The Vikings are very talented and well coached on defense.

The Good:

  •  DeSean Jackson is the best deep threat in the National Football League. I’m not even sure if it’s close. The guy is ridiculous at what he does.

  • Alfred Morris plays a lot better with RGIII at helm because of Griffin’s running ability. Morris’ two touchdowns, of course, kept Washington in the game. However, for the ninth consecutive week, Morris has yet to run for 100 yards in a game. That’s unbelievable.

  • Right Tackle Tom Compton stood out to me. He had a good game and helped spring a few nice runs.

  • Bashaud Breeland continues to impress. Not just in coverage, but he does a great job sticking his head into traffic to make tackles. He got away with a hold and probably had two slip-ups in coverage. However, he continues to be the Redskins best defense back.

The Bad:

  • The Washington Redskins interior offensive line is just not good. The Vikings were able to get pressure up the middle early and often. A couple of the five sacks were on Griffin. However, the interior line — especially the guards — have been pretty bad all year.

  • David Amerson was picked on a lot. I have to watch back the film to confirm it, but I think he struggled some in coverage.

The Ugly:

  • Jim Haslett coached a horrible football game — which doesn’t surprise me. The only team in all of football he’s good at scheming is the Dallas Cowboys. It’s been that way for five years now. Haslett decided to try allowing the defense to get pressure with four — which they don’t have the tools to do. He also kept calling zone coverage — which is something the Redskins have no clue how to play. He played to Teddy Bridgewater’s strengths. The defense as a whole was absolutely horrible. Some may say they were pitching a shutout early in the game. But let’s not forget, Teddy Bridgewater missed on two would-have-been long touchdowns. They weren’t able to do anything against the Vikings offense.

  • The Redskins got in a bus accident prior to the game which could have been tragic according to players and staff.
