NEW POLL SAYS OWNERS ARE THE ONES TO BLAME
|
Groups of players all around the country have been gathering on their own to work
out together, doing what they can to keep themselves in shape and ready for when the
owners’ lockout is lifted.
A recent poll points to fans placing more blame on owners than on players for the
league’s labor unrest.
In a Boston-based poll containing 1,070 responders, 32 percent of them blamed the
owners for the lockout. Nineteen percent placed the blame at the feet of the players,
while 30 percent were undecided.

A ‘PRICE IS RIGHT’ JOB TIP
|
Your job search is a lot like “The Price is Right.”
Think about it. In both cases, hundreds of people who want the same thing try to
get the attention of one person (Drew Carey/the hiring manager), in the hopes of
competing for the grand prize (an RV/a new job).
In both cases, it can be hard to get yourself noticed. So, like the people on
“The Price is Right” who wear feathers and glitter and outfits made of Plinko chips,
you might need to put in a little extra effort to stand out from the crowd in your
job search.
Fortunately, though, you won’t need to dress up in a cheesy t-shirt and jump around
on national television to do it. According to a recent survey by CareerBuilder,
simply taking a few extra steps in your job search process can make all the
difference when it comes to catching the eye of a hiring manager.

Cornelius Bennett Pens Op-Ed Asking Owners to Lift the Lockout
from NFLLockout.com
The Buffalo Bills have had plenty of great players in their franchise’s history. Cornelius Bennett is one of them. Once a star linebacker and now an elected leader among former players, Bennett is
uniquely tied to the Bills’ history.
As a fan and former Bills player, Bennett is interested and engaged in the NFL labor situation. He recently wrote an op-ed that was published in the Buffalo News over the weekend. Among some excerpts of Bennett’s op-ed are:
“Players want to play for teams that have a chance to win. Small-market teams like the Bills have as good a chance to win as any other team in the league. This lockout hurts small-market teams,
especially the Bills.”
“I was in those negotiation sessions representing the interests of former players but also looking out for my Bills franchise that I love so much. Players want to play, but we also want what’s fair
for the game. We believe in the connection between a city, its players and its team. A lockout erodes that connection.”

Media, Money and NFL Football
By Nate Jackson, TE for the Denver Broncos from 2003 to 2008
The NFL lockout is a stupid, boring business situation that has gotten way too much media coverage. But when, as a league, your goal is to sell every single aspect of the business, and not just the
game, this type of intense scrutiny on business matters is inevitable. The interesting part is that the media actually plays along, perhaps an indication of how closely they depend on each other for
financial security.

Politicians, Business Owners File Brief Supporting Players
from NFLLockout.com
A 44-member group of elected officials and business owners filed an amicus brief in support of the players on Tuesday, stating that a federal court made the correct decision to order an injunction to
lift the lockout.
The group is comprised of 32 elected officials who represent states and localities that host NFL teams or that otherwise depend on NFL-driven revenues and the proprietors of local businesses that
depend on game day for their financial survival.
“This injunction is about far more than the paychecks of the players or the fortunes of the owners,” the brief stated. “It is also about the livelihoods of the business owners whose livelihoods
depend on NFL game day and the taxpayers and elected officials who have committed their scarce resources to the NFL enterprise.”
The brief points out that it is in the public interest for the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to uphold the federal court’s ruling to end the owner-imposed lockout.
“The NFL is a multi-billion-dollar business, with a significant economic impact on the markets in which its teams are located,” the brief stated. “In addition to employing workers directly, the NFL’s
teams also drive business for hotels, restaurants, bars, and other service industries. As a result, the NFL’s lockout threatens the livelihood of thousands of American workers.”
The brief also cites several economic studies provided by NFL teams that prove how important NFL games are to local economies.

VQ OrthoCare® Offers NFLPA Former Player Members the Opportunity to Live Without Knee Pain
Medical device company offers a special discount program on BioniCare, the only
device that can claim to provide an overall improvement to an osteoarthritic knee
VQ OrthoCare®, creator of the award-winning BioniCare® Knee System, is pleased to announce its
BioniCare member discount program for National Football League Players Association (NFPLA)
former player members and their families. VQ OrthoCare initiated this discount program based
on the need for a non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical treatment option for retired professional
athletes living with osteoarthritis of the knee. Professional athletes move their knees up to
20 million times per year. In contrast, the average person uses their knees only three million
times per year. The constant knee movements wear down the knee joints, increasing the risk of
osteoarthritis of the knee (Overtime Magazine, 2007). In conjunction with the BioniCare member
discount program, VQ OrthoCare is also offering a financial aid program for former player members
needing assistance. “More than 27 million Americans are living with osteoarthritis of the knee
and National Football League players are three times more likely to develop osteoarthritis of the
knee than the general population,” said VQ OrthoCare president and founder, Jim Knape. “We are
thrilled to be offering former player members of the NFLPA and their families the opportunity to
utilize this life-changing treatment option that will enable them to live pain free and regain
their active lifestyles.”

HEALTH
Knee Osteoarthritis: Is Knee Replacement Surgery Inevitable?
from WebMD Medical Reference
Knee osteoarthritis (OA), can make almost anything you do painful: walking, climbing stairs, –
even sitting or lying down. Although knee replacement surgery is one osteoarthritis treatment
option that can help bring relief, it’s not the only one. There are many choices to try first that
can reduce knee pain, improve your ability to move, and possibly delay or eliminate your need for
joint replacement surgery altogether.
- Acetaminophen (Tylenol). This is the first medication to try as a knee OA treatment,
say arthritis specialists. That’s because it’s relatively safe compared to other pain relievers,
although too much can cause liver damage. Acetaminophen doesn’t lessen inflammation.
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These can help relieve pain and fight
inflammation that may be adding to your pain. There are prescription NSAIDs your doctor can
prescribe. Available over-the-counter, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB) and naproxen (Aleve) are
among your other options for pain relief.
- Other analgesics. When other pain-relievers fail to control pain, your doctor may
prescribe stronger analgesics. These include tramadol (Ultram) and acetaminophen with codeine
(Tylenol with codeine).
