Eli Restructures Contract to Open Cap Space

While Peyton has been stealing all the headlines this week, as he looks for a new team to pursue a Super Bowl title with, little brother and Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning quietly took some measures this week to try to ensure that the Giants can get back to the Big Dance.

Dynasties in the NFL are hard to come by, and the biggest reason is that after assembling a team good enough to win a Super Bowl, the salary cap makes it hard to keep the team together for a repeat run.  Eli restructured his contract on Thursday to give the Giants more cap room to

Under the terms of the new deal, the Giants will guarantee $9 million of Manning’s $10.75 million salary in 2012.  The move allows the Giants to divide the guaranteed portion over the final four years of the contract, reducing his base salary to $1.75 million, and clearing roughly $6.75 million in cap space.

The Giants were over the cap, so the restructured contract gives them a little more room to try to retain some of the free agents on the team, and potentially sign some new players.
