When it comes to the Miami Dolphins, fans do not think of speed as their main weapon. The two players associated with the minimal speed the Dolphins had were Reggie Bush and Devone Bess, who no longer play for the Fins. Although, this season seems to be shaping up for huge gains in the speed department. In an interview with Dannell Ellerbe, Jimmy Wilson, and Philip Wheeler it seemed as if they were most excited for the explosive additions to their team.
For tight coverage, the defense needs to have the ability to maintain pace with the offensive player they are in coverage with. This is especially relevant for Miami’s secondary that gave up many third down plays due to lack of coverage. Wilson has high hopes for the Dolphin’s secondary in accomplishing their coverage goals during the upcoming season. He was adamant about new additions to the defensive line being explosive enough to intimidate opposing QBs. If the QBs are rattled in the pocket, they are more likely to throw off target which is where Wilson will come into play, intercepting the ball.
Speed will be the Dolphin’s main strength this season according to Wheeler. He made a point to mention Mike Wallace, who he believes is going to be a huge play maker with his agility and route running skills. On the whole, Wheeler thinks the Dolphins have a fast team, which will “help [them] out a lot.” Ellerbe also commented that the Dolphins are “one of the fastest teams” and that their O line is quick enough to help Ryan Tannehill make plays. Wilson also commented on the speed improvement of Tannehill stating that he is becoming “bigger, faster, and stronger” even when “we threw a lot at him early on.”
While speed is very important to the Dolphins, the players also stressed the importance of gaining home field advantage and winning games early. They hinted that a lot of the home field advantage stems from the fans; if the fans are into the game, it really affects the players in a positive way. All three players commented that they are determined to come out of games winning because if they kick off the season well, all the fans will be on board.
With training camp coming up soon, fans can eagerly await the answer to one of their main concerns; will the Miami Dolphins have the speed necessary to win football games?
