A game isn’t ever over until it is played; that’s a general rule of thumb and also some basic logic, but some games may seem like an incredible challenge to one team or just an easy victory to another. That’s what most fans thought this game was going to be for the number 7 league-ranked St. Louis Blues taking on the dead-last Arizona Coyotes, especially on the Blues home ice.
Despite having the home-ice advantage, the last game that was played at Scottrade Center the Blues were completely dominated by the Florida Panthers 7-4. So, either something is wrong with the team or they have fixed their slump and are ready to get back to their winning ways. The Arizona Coyotes however are starting to get back into their groove as well as they have managed to take 5 of their last 7 games to overtime thanks to their goaltender Antti Raanta. Backup goalie Carter Hutton will get the start for the Blues and Raanta would get another start.
Another interesting element in this game would be a little sibling rivalry between defenseman Luke Schenn of the Coyotes and Brayden Schenn of the Blues, so that is sure to up both of their games to ‘one-up’ one another.
The game took off immediately as just a minute and 53 seconds into the game, Max Domi slid one from behind the net to forward Zac Rinaldo as he shot one into the open net to make it 1-0 Coyotes. Just 2 minutes later, Christian Dvorak would redirect a goal from the point from defenseman Jason Demers to make it 2-0 Coyotes. With it now being 7 minutes and 6 seconds into the game, the Coyotes would score yet again as Tobias Reider would slide one to the open-in-front Christian Dvorak for his 2nd goal of the game to make it 3-0 Coyotes. That would be the end of Carter Hutton’s night as he let in 3 goals on 12 shots. Jake Allen would come in to take his spot.
With just a little under 7 minutes left to play, the Coyotes sprung out again with Brendan Perlini finding the weak spot on Jake Allen to make it 4-0 Coyotes in the first period. That makes it 3 goals in 2 games for Perlini this season.
By the start of the 2nd period, just 4 and a half minutes in the Coyotes were at it again as Max Domi passed one to defenseman Jakob Chychrun who shot one where Christian Fischer would redirect it to make it 5-0 Coyotes. St. Louis would eventually get on the powerplay where Brayden Schenn would shoot one home to cut the Coyotes lead to 4; with the score being 5-1. That would conclude the 2nd period.
With 10 minutes gone from the 3rd period, the Blues would be on the powerplay yet again where Vince Dunn would float one to the net and eventually Alexander Steen would put it home to make it 5-2 Coyotes. That would conclude the scoring for this game. A dominating effort from the Coyotes as they just completely outplayed the superstar team. Antti Raanta made 25 saves from 27 shots. Despite the overwhelming victory, the Coyotes are still sitting at a record of 11-28-9 where as the St. Louis Blues are sitting at a8-28-3 record.
The next game for the Coyotes will be on Monday at Gila River Arena against the New York Islanders. Two of the Clader Trophy candidates in Clayton Keller and Mat Barzal will face one another.
