Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon Fails Yet Another Drug Test; Faces One Year Suspension

Some people will just never learn.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter, citing league sources, confirmed today that Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon has failed yet another drug test, this time testing positive for alcohol, and could face a one-year suspension from the league.

The newest failed test is just the latest for a player who can’t seem to keep himself out of trouble and it puts not only his time with the Browns, but his entire future in the NFL in great doubt.

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com spoke with a source who was quoted as saying the suspension is a “done deal” with a reversal of the ban no expected to happen.  Gordon is subjected to alcohol testing from the league because of his July 2014 DUI arrest.

The 23-year-old Gordon was just suspended for the first 10 games of the 2014 season, for again violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, that time for testing positive for marijuana.  He was suppose to be lost for the year, but after the NFL changed it’s policy, his season long suspension was reduced to 10 games.

He didn’t even last until the end of the season though, as after playing in five games this year, Gordon was suspended by the team for the regular season finale against the Baltimore Ravens for violating team rules.

In his three year career, the extremely talented but troubled wide out has already been suspended for 13 games for either league or team-levied suspensions.

Gordon’s contract with the Browns will be tolled through the 2016 season, meaning he will still be under team control through then.  He will only be eligible for restricted free agency in 2017, that is if the Browns even want to keep him around.  A release seems quite likely.

It really is a sad tale, as such a talent has been wasted because he can’t keep himself out of trouble.

At the end of the day though, there is only one person to blame for this, and that is Gordon himself.

It might be too late for him to get yet another chance to turn things around.
