Chiefs head coach Andy Reid received a standing ovation from the Philadelphia fans prior to the game, and a congratulatory Gatorade shower from his team as quarterback Alex Smith took a knee to run out the clock on a memorable night in Philadelphia. The Chiefs were able to grind out another victory their third win of the year, one more than they had all of last year, with a 26-16 victory.
The Chiefs defense forced three fumbles and two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown by safety Eric Berry, for a total of five turnovers on the night. Linebacker Justin Houston had 4.5 sacks, as the Chiefs front seven controlled the line of scrimmage for most of the game. However the Chiefs defense was far from perfect on the night as they allowed 264 yards rushing, 158 of which came from running back LeSean McCoy.
McCoy wasn’t the only factor in the run game tonight, as Michael Vick had four carries for 99 yards, but turned the ball over three times. The Eagles offense was never able to find any consistency due to a mixture of turnovers and strong defensive play from Kansas City. Wide receiver Jason Avant was able to find some weak points in the Chiefs defense with 5 receptions for 87 yards and touchdown on the night, but counterpart DeSean Jackson was held relatively quiet with only 3 receptions for 62 yards.
This season the Chiefs formula for success has been to take care of the football, make plays on defense and take advantage of the other teams mistakes. Thursday night was no different, as the Eagles looked out of sync while Andy Reid and company looked right at home.
