Brady’s Assault on the Record Books

While there will be no celebrating in Foxboro after the loss to the Buffalo Bills this past weekend, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady continues to break records and put up numbers that could result in another record-breaking season for him.

While the 4 interceptions that he threw on Sunday (equal to the number he threw in all 16 regular season games last year) made Brady look mortal for a change, the rest of his work through 3 games has been mind-boggling.

Brady has thrown for 1,327 yards in three games, which is the record for any quarterback over any three game span in NFL history, breaking the former record of 1,257 yards set by Drew Brees in 2006.  If he continues at that pace, he would throw for over 7,000 yards this season.

The current single season record seems well within his grasp given the start he’s had.  Dan Marino has held the record of 5,084 yards for over a quarter of a century.  In fact, the 5,000 yard club is one of the most elite in the NFL.  Marino was the only member for 24 years, until Drew Brees joined him in 2008.

Throwing for 7,000 yards would be like running a three minute mile.

Brady is also on pace to throw for over 58 touchdowns, which would shatter the record of 50 which he set in 2007.

Ultimately, the numbers are a sideshow as the most important thing in New England is getting back to the Super Bowl.  With the points and passing yardage New England has given up (the 369 yards they gave up to Buffalo’s Ryan Fitzpatrick is actually the FEWEST passing yards they have given up to an opponent all year), Brady may have to shatter those records if the Patriots are going to make a deep run into the postseason.
