AFC and NFC Notes for NFL Week 6

AFC Notes
Teams have combined for 248 touchdown passes in 2014, the most of any NFL season through Week 5. Standout performances by tight ends have contributed to the trend.
Through Week 5, NFL tight ends have combined for 752 receptions, 8,194 receiving yards and 72 touchdown catches, all of which are on pace to be the highest combined totals for the position of any season in NFL history.
In 2013, NFL tight ends broke the single-season record for the most receiving yards (27,284) and touchdown catches (236) for the position. Tight ends also combined for 2,384 catches, which ranked second to 2012’s record total (2,401)

“This game has always been about matchups,” says NFL Network analyst and former head coach BRIAN BILLICK. “You hear coaches say it every week: where are my best matchups? Well, your best matchup today is likely a tight end against a linebacker or safety. To have a talent that can stretch the field like a legitimate receiver but also be a point of attack in-line blocker, that’s why everyone covets one of those guys.”
There have been 10 individual multiple-touchdown performances by tight ends in 2014, the second most through Week 5 of any NFL season (12 in 2013), including two by AFC tight ends this past weekend. Their teams have posted a 9-1 record in those contests.
Denver’s JULIUS THOMAS, who leads all NFL players with seven touchdowns this season, had two TD catches in the Broncos’ 41-20 win against Arizona on Sunday. San Diego’s ANTONIO GATES had two touchdowns in the Chargers’ 31-0 win against the Jets in Week 5.
Thomas’ seven touchdowns are the most ever by a tight end through his team’s first four games of a season, surpassing the mark of six previously shared by Gates (2010) and JIMMY GRAHAM (2013). Thomas aims to become the first tight end in NFL history to lead the league in total touchdowns for a season.
Gates now has 92 touchdown catches, the second-most ever by a tight end (TONY GONZALEZ, 111), and No. 10 on the all-time list.
And last week, Dallas’ JASON WITTEN (10,014) became the third tight end in NFL history with 10,000 career receiving yards, joining Gonzalez (15,127) and Sharpe (10,060).
“I’ve never seen this many tight ends this good at one particular time,” says Pro Football Hall of FamerSHANNON SHARPE, one of eight tight ends enshrined in Canton. “We’ve never seen the position this dominant. This is the golden age of tight ends.”

NFC Notes
Green Bay quarterback AARON RODGERS will play in his 100th career NFL game this Sunday when the Packers visit the Miami Dolphins. Drafted in the first round (No. 24 overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft out of California, Rodgers appeared in seven games during his first three seasons before taking over as the team’s starting quarterback in 2008.
In his 92 career regular-season starts, Rodgers has guided the Packers to a 61-31 record (.663). He has been selected to three Pro Bowls (2009, 2011 and 2012 seasons) and was named the 2011 Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player.
“People really count on me to be consistent each week and to play well,” says Rodgers. “If I’m playing consistent and doing things I know I’m supposed to do, we’ll be able to have some success because of it.”
In the postseason, he has won five games (5-4 record), including Super Bowl XLV when he was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.
“Aaron is the leader of the Green Bay Packers,” says head coach MIKE MC CARTHY about Rodgers, “and serves as a great example to our entire organization, fans and community.”
Earlier this season, Rodgers reached 25,000 career passing yards and is one of only five players all-time to reach the milestone in his first 100 games. Rodgers, who reached the mark in his 98th game, needed the fewest attempts (3,065) in NFL history to accomplish the feat.
