Steelers GM Says No Decision Yet on Ward

Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said Monday that the team hasn’t made a decision about wide receiver Hines Ward yet.  Ward has 2 years and $8 million remaining on his contract, and with the emergence of Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown last year, Ward dropped to a #3/#4 option at wide receiver.

What our team will be at training camp? I don’t know what it will be,” Colbert said.

The Steelers are one of the few teams that is still over the cap, and has restructured several contracts as they work to get back in line with the cap for the start of the league year in March.  The Steelers have already restructured contracts for CB Ike Taylor, LB Lawrence Timmons, LB Lamarr Woodley, and apparently still have work to do to get in line with the cap.

Jason LaCanfora has indicated that Ward won’t be back next season, a victim of the cap.  Ward has indicated that he’d be willing to be restructured and take a pay cut to stay as a Steeler, but that decision may be out of his hand.

Ward has over 12,000 yards in his career, and had 10 consecutive seasons of over 700 yards prior to this year.  His 12,083 yards is second most among active players, trailing only Tony Gonzalez who has 13,338.
