2018 SCOUTING COMBINE DAY 2 TESTING RECAP

2018 SCOUTING COMBINE DAY 2 TESTING RECAP

By: PPIDraftPro

The tight ends, quarterbacks, and wide receivers tested with several players who helped themselves. We count this as day two because nobody really watched the specialists but we would like to see them on television next year.

NEWS AND NOTES

-          South Dakota State tight end Dallas Goedert is still recovering from the hamstring injury he suffered at the Senior Bowl. He did not workout but should test fully at his pro day on campus on March 30th. This is one of many reasons why I will say that all-star games should start paying the players. I know they pay expenses but any legit all-star game should not only pay expenses but give the players a check for showing up. There is a risk/reward for showing up and they should be compensated for it. We hope that day comes soon where a game starts paying them.

-          The previous day, Southern California RB Ronald Jones II had a bad day with a hamstring injury in his first attempt at the 40-yard dash. We hope he can do a full workout at his pro day.

-          Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield said to ignore the bad performance by his teammate Orlando Brown and the only stat to pay attention to is “0 sacks” as Brown was a brick wall in the Big 12 in 2017 by not giving up any sacks.

QUARTERBACKS

There were a couple players who stood out and one who showed he might be a workout warrior who just struggles in games.

RISERS

KYLE LAULETTA, RICHMOND

This was a very good day for the Richmond Spider with a 4.81 40, 31 inch vertical, 6.95 3-cone, 4.07 short shuttle, and 9’5 broad jump. He looked solid in drills as well and might sneak into the 4th round now.

TANNER LEE, NEBRASKA

Lee measured at 6’4, 218 pounds and looked good throwing the ball. He had a 32 inch vertical, 4.98 40, 7.00 3-cone, and 4.41 short shuttle. Lee was very good in the throwing drills but he is a turnover machine on the field and will have to improve on that. Those who wondered why he got a combine invite saw why with his workout.

JOSH ALLEN, WYOMING

Events like this are made for Allen and he showed why. He measured in just under 6’5, 237 pounds and has hands of 10 1/8 inches. He ran a very good 4.75 40, 33 ½ inch vertical, 6.90 3-cone, 4.40 short shuttle, and 9’11 broad jump. He can really spin it and make all the throws. Could this workout and a good pro day put him in the top 5 for sure? We think so.

FALLERS

LAMAR JACKSON, LOUISVILLE

You could tell that Jackson was not comfortable in his dropbacks due to lack of experience and it showed badly. He chose not to run the 40 in a situation where you think he would want to display how fast he is. He chose not to do anything except throw and it was a flag to us. He will drop down our board a little bit but the tape is still very good and he should still go in the top 50 picks.

WIDE RECEIVERS
There weren’t really any players who had a bad workout all around but a couple players did miss a chance to help themselves while several took advantage and stood out.

RISERS

D.J. CHARK, LSU

This LSU product showed why the expectation is that his best days are ahead because he is a test freak who should have had over 1,000 years for at least two or three years in college. Chark ran a 4.34 40, did 16 bench reps, had a 40 inch vertical, and 10’9 broad jump at 6’3, 199 pounds. He could go in the top 40 picks now.

DJ MOORE, MARYLAND

Moore declared as a junior and his production made the media question it but he could be a top 50 pick and that was just clinched in his combine workout. His workout was very good all around with a 4.42 40-yard dash, 15 bench reps, 39 ½ inch vertical, 11’0 broad jump, 6.95 3-cone, and 4.07 short shuttle. Not only is he fast but he can change direction and he is explosive, as shown in the drills. He showed pretty good hands as well. Could he be a surprise first or early second round pick? We think so.

DYLAN CANTRELL, TEXAS TECH

This Red Raider is one of those big targets at 6’3, 226 pounds but tested like a smaller guy. He ran a 4.59 40-yard dash, 18 bench reps, 38 ½ inch vertical, 10’10 broad jump, 6.56 3-cone, and 4.03 short shuttle. For a man that size he can run and showed good change of direction skills. He could go as high as the 4th or 5th round now.

FALLERS

SIMMIE COBBS, INDIANA

Cobbs had a disappointing day with just 11 bench reps, a 30-inch vertical, 4.64 40, 6.7 3-cone, and 4.32 short shuttle at 6’3, 220 pounds. Those numbers aren’t awful but compared to the others it certainly hurt him.

TIGHT ENDS

There was not really anyone who put up a bad workout overall from this group but three players really helped themselves and put on a freak show. It was a good day for this group.

RISERS

MIKE GESICKI, PENN STATE

Gesicki had an outstanding day with a blazing 4.54 40 at 6053, 247 pounds with a very good 22 reps on the bench press, 4.10 short shuttle, 6.76 3-cone, and 10’9 broad jump. Could this push him into the top 40? It is possible.

MARK ANDREWS, OKLAHOMA

At 6’5, 256 pounds the Sooner pass catcher ran a 4.67 40, had 17 bench reps, had a 7.34 3-cone, 4.38 short shuttle, and a 9’5 broad jump. This was a pretty good workout that should put him in the top 50 picks, even though his film was more like 3rd or 4th round film.

FALLERS
RYAN IZZO, FLORIDA STATE

While this was not awful, this workout was among the lesser workouts of the day with a 4.94 40, 4.43 short shuttle, 7.15 3-cone, and 18 bench reps at 6’5, 256 pounds.
