Washington Redskins and Macy’s Team Up for a Winter Coat Giveaway

The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation and Macy’s teamed up to donate 300 coats, scarves, gloves and hats to underserved youth from the Washington, D.C. Metro Area at the annual “Covered for the Holidays” event at Macy’s Metro Center on Tuesday.

Schools in attendance were – Beacon Heights Elementary (MD), Rolling ridge Elementary (Va.), St. Anthony’s Catholic (D.C.), Thomson Elementary (D.C.), Seaton  Elementary (D.C.) and Walker-Jones Educational Campus (D.C.).

Several Redskins’ players were on hand to assist the children with selecting coats and writing ‘Believe Letters’ to Santa. Macy’s “Believe” campaign invites children to mail letters to Santa using Macy’s Santa Mail Letterboxes. Macy’s donates $1 for each letter mailed in store, up to $1 million, to the Make-A-Wish Foundation®.

“It’s the holidays and it’s too cold out here for children not to have jackets in the winter,” Washington Redskins’ receiver Joshua Morgan said. “We definitely just want to help as many people as we can – getting into the holiday spirit.”

The children were ecstatic to see Washington’s star rookie running back Alfred Morris — so excited that Alfred was met at the door by a bunch of children asking for an autograph. Although, there was one child that had another idea in mind — he greeted Alfred, gave him a paper with his own autograph on it and then asked Alfred to sign above his signature. “I love kids — I’m a big kid at heart,” Morris said. “I just wanted to come out and help the kids and make sure they continue to work hard.”

The “Covered for the Holidays” event is part of the Redskins “Season of Sharing” campaign in which the team is embarking on several initiatives to give back to the community throughout the holiday season.
