During his 1:00 PM press conference with the media at One Bills Drive on Tuesday, Vince Young made it clear he is excited to grow not only as a quarterback, but also as a mature individual, throughout the 2012 season with the Buffalo Bills. Young appeared to be cool, calm and well spoken as the media rapid-fired questions in his direction at the press conference and overall, he gave the media and Bills fans the answers they wanted to hear.
Young told the media he is grateful for the experiences he has had in the NFL, as well as the people he has been able to work with. Now, he is ready to get in with Coach Lee and Coach Chan Gailey in Buffalo to broaden his horizons and work with another great coaching staff. Throughout his comments about Gailey, Young is obviously very fond of the Bills head coach, stating, “He knows what he’s doing. Just reading his history, he has a long beautiful history. At the same time he just missed a little bit short on not winning so I want myself or Fitz and Thig, that’s our whole goal. That’s our goal is to win that championship for him.”
Young realizes the slump the Buffalo Bills are in as they have not made the playoffs in 12 straight seasons and he, along with the rest of his team members, are looking to end the streak this season. He even took it to the level of stating the possibility of the Buffalo Bills winning the Super Bowl this season. Although he is not the starting quarterback for the Buffalo Bills as of right now, Young commented on taking on the back-up role stating, “I’m pretty much used to is. All you can do is come in and work.” Young talked about how injuries can take a toll on a team, as they did last season for the Bills, and he wants to be able to step in at any time and take over the quarterback role effectively if an injury to Fitzpatrick ever occurs.
As a NFL quarterback and player, Young has often been scrutinized for some of his immature actions and this was also addressed at the press conference today in Buffalo. Going into his seventh season in the NFL, Young believes he has learned a lot from the coaches and players he has worked with and he is going to ignore what others say about him and focus on work. He even stated, “As the history goes, you notice guys get more mature in their sixth and seventh year. That’s the biggest thing. I have definitely learned how to handle different situations now. I just go to work. That’s all you can do.” Vince Young is ready to take on his role with the Buffalo Bills and feels as though he will do a better job at making the right decisions in regards to both his statements and actions.
Overall, many were impressed with Young’s appearance and stature, and this may be a sign his career is headed in the right direction once again. He is excited to get the opportunity to be back on the field, although he is only signed to a one year deal with Buffalo. And he is looking to do whatever it takes to improve his game. Young is going to focus on playing the game he loves as well as working on how he comes across to others. He stated, “My biggest thing is trying to change my perception and who I am as a person.”
Young obviously sees what has been said about his professionalism, or lack thereof, and is going to do whatever it takes to convince people he is a changed person. We wish him the best with the Buffalo Bills and hope he does change the trajectory of his career.
