During the NFL’s “Salute to Veterans” campaign, teams around the league have been hosting a number of military veterans and their families to take place in pre-game ceremonies. In addition to field-access, fans in the stands have been showing their appreciate for these brave men and women by holding up cards with messages on them such as “Thank You Veterans.” The NFL has also been donating $100 for every point scored by any team during game this weekend.
When the Steelers and Chiefs kicked off on MNF, during the National Anthem, fans at Heinz Field held up their cards. Immediately after the anthem, a military flyover was conducted in honor of Lt. Col. Christopher “Otis”Raible, an Irwin Native who was lost in action during his time in Afghanistan in September of this year.
The on-field celebration and show honored veterans and survivors of Pearl Harbor, WWII, the Korean War, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. These honored guests stood on the Steelers’ sideline during the anthem while camouflage banners were displayed throughout the stadium.
Fans are encouraged to visit www.millionfansalute.com to create a digital salute in honor of the men and women serving our country. The website will be taking submissions through November 26th and the three NFL markets with the most salutes will earn rewards from USAA for their local military community.
