The New Orleans Saints put an official end to all of the Bill Parcells rumors today when they announced that assistant head coach and linebackers coach Joe Vitt has been promoted to interim head coach in the absence of Sean Payton.
Payton is suspended for the entire season and his suspension goes into effect on Monday.
Vitt will handle the day to day duties of the team during the rest of the offseason and though the pre-season. Then, Vitt will himself be suspended for the first six weeks of the season and the Saints will be forced to name an interim, interim head coach.
The Saints have not announced who will take over for Vitt when his is forced out of the building at the end of the pre-season.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that offensive line coach Aaron Kromer is expected to be the teams other interim coach during the team’s first six games.
Saint’s general manager Mickey Loomis said in a statement, “It is important to keep Sean Payton’s philosophy front and center during this season.”
Loomis also stated that this is the same structure that the team used last season when the team was forced to play a few games without Payton due to a leg injure.
