The Baltimore Ravens have selected the recipient of the 2014 NFL Hispanic Heritage Leadership Award. Ana Maris Schwartz Caballero will be honored at Sunday’s game versus the Carolina Panthers at M&T Bank stadium:
The NFL and the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) have partnered for the fourth-annual NFL Hispanic Heritage Leadership Award during the 2014 celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The award recognizes the contributions of Hispanic leaders in each NFL market.
Schwartz Caballero is an Associate Professor of Spanish and Second Language Education and Affiliate Faculty in the Language, Literacy and Culture Program at UMBC. She has also served as Chair of the Department of Modern Languages, Linguistics and Intercultural Communication (2006-12). Her research focus is on heritage Spanish speakers: language teaching and learning strategies and curriculum development. In addition, she serves as President of the Latino/Hispanic Faculty Association and Faculty Advisor for the Hispanic/Latino Student Union. Schwartz Caballero is a member of the Executive Committee on the Recruitment, Retention and Advancement of Underrepresented Minority Faculty and the UMBC Hispanic and Latino Student Admissions Advisory Group. She is Chair of Baltimore City Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake’s Hispanic Commission and member of the Legislative Task Force on the Preservation of Heritage Language Skills in Maryland (2008). She has been involved in advocacy activities with CASA de Maryland, especially in the passage of theMaryland Dream Act. Her list of accolades also includes: founding member and steering committee member of the Alliance for the Advancement of Heritage Languages and recipient of the 2007 “Legends of Excellence Award: 40 Years of Inspiring African American and Latino Students” from the UMBC African American and Latino Alumni Association.
“It is an honor to be recognized in such a public way, by the Ravens, on the field for the start of the game,” said Schwartz Caballero. “I share this award with the members of our Latino community who work so hard to better their lives and who make our state a better place to live; and with my students, whose drive and persistence are my inspiration.”
Schwartz Caballero has chosen UMBC’s Esperanza Scholarship Fund to receive a $2,000 grant to support its continued work in Baltimore’s Hispanic community.
