Carolina’s rookie quarterback Cam Newton has done some amazing things this season, and he just set another record yesterday. He picked up two rushing touchdowns yesterday, bringing him to nine this season, the most for a rookie quarterback since the merger.
The previous record was seven, by Vince Young in 2006. The record for most rushing touchdowns by any quarterback is 12, by Steve Grogan in 1976, which looks likely to fall this season as well. The fact that Newton still has six games to go is even more amazing.
So far this year, Newton has completed 60 percent of his passes for 2,885 yards and 12 TDs, with 14 INTs. He has also run the ball 77 times for 411 yards and 9 TDs.
That puts him on pace for 4,615 passing yards, 658 rushing yards, 19 passing TDs and 14 rushing TDs.
In addition to the rushing TDs by a quarterback, he also has already set the most passing yards in a single game by a rookie (432). The record for most passing yards in a rookie season is held by Peyton Manning with 3,739, and that looks well within reach, too.
And if this season is anything to go by, Newton could be rewriting a lot of record books over the coming years.
