Now that we’re past the turn and into the second half of the season, it’s time to start thinking about the Playoffs (apologies, as always, to Jim Mora). Jerry Jones, looking at the standings, isn’t optimistic about the Cowboys chances for a Wild Card slot, and feels that they must win the division.
“It’s very early and I wouldn’t dare to venture what can happen,” Jones said. “I will say this. We’re going to need to win the division, I think, to get in the playoffs.”
After yesterday’s crushing win over the Buffalo Bills, the Cowboys are at 5-4, and everyone else in their division lost yesterday, moving them to one game behind the division leading Giants, so winning the division is certainly within their grasp.
As to the Wild Card picture – there’s still plenty of time, but Jones is probably right. The 49ers will be the only team to come out of the West, and Green Bay is likely to win the North. Assuming New Orleans wins the South (playing well with a 2 game lead), that leaves Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago and the runner-up in the East to fight for the two Wild Card slots.
Plus, Dallas is in full control of their own destiny, with two games against the New York Giants in the final four weeks.
