The New York Jets and the New York Giants squared off Saturday night for a pre-season matchup at Metlife Stadium. At the end of the night, the Jets claimed a 24-21 overtime victory in the “Battle for New York.”
Jets coach Rex Ryan is on the hot seat this season, and still doesn’t seem to know who his starting quarterback will be come week one. Geno Smith got the Jets going with a 22-yard touchdown pass on his second drive, but then proceeded to throw three interceptions before halftime. Mark Sanchez then entered the game and went 5/6 for 72 yards. The Jets got no support on the ground; leading rusher Bilal Powell carried the ball 11 times for 16 yards. Sanchez took a big shot from Giants’ defensive tackle Marvin Austin and went to the ground and was later taken for x-rays.
The Giants’ offense started off the game with an 84-yard touchdown run from David Wilson on the very first play from scrimmage. Wilson finished with five carries for 92 yards. Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning slung the ball around the field 20 times, connecting with a receiver on eight of his passes for 83 yards.
The Giants close out their pre-season Thursday at Gillette Stadium in New England. The Jets will continue to search for answers at quarterback Thursday at home versus the Philadelphia Eagles.
