Jaguars lose Mathis, Britton and Bosworth

The Jacksonville Jaguars got hit hard with injuries this week, as they placed two starters and a key backup on the injured reserve – cornerback Rashean Mathis, guard Eben Britton and backup linebacker and special teams standout Kyle Bosworth.

Mathis tore the ACL in his left knee this week and will have surgery, ending his season.  Britton has already missed four games and developed an infection following back surgery during training camp.  Bosworth broke his left hand this week as well.

It’s life in the NFL,” Jags head coach Jack Del Rio said. “It’s a tough business. It was nice to get a win. Tough for a couple guys to get news that they’re going to go on IR, but as a football team we’re going forward doing the best we can.”

The big lost was Mathis, who was playing some of the best football he’s played since his 2006 Pro Bowl season.

“It’s unfortunate,” Del Rio said. “He’s a good football player. He’s having a good year for us and so obviously, as we do, we move on as a team.”

“That’s a huge loss,” defensive end Jeremy Mincy added. “That’s a veteran voice we need out there.”

While the injuries were costly, the Jaguars did win the game over the Indianapolis Colts, improving their record to 3-6 and getting their second win in the last 3 games.  They face the 3-6 Cleveland Browns next weekend.
