DOLPHINS OPEN 2014 AT HOME AGAINST NEW ENGLAND, TRAVEL TO LONDON
Miami, FL – For only the second time since 2008, the Miami Dolphins will open the NFL regular season at home when they host their AFC East Divisional rival New England Patriots on September 7 at Sun Life Stadium. The opener against the Patriots is the eighth time the two divisional rivals will meet to start the season and the fourth time the teams will play in South Florida. Week Two sees Miami travel to Buffalo for a Sunday afternoon matchup with the Bills on September 14 at 1:00 pm. Miami will play division opponents in consecutive games to start the season for the first time since 1998 (24-15 victory at Indianapolis in Week One followed by a 13-7 victory vs. Buffalo in Week Two).
“Our organization is excited about the schedule and we look forward to playing our home opener in front of our great fans,“ said Miami Dolphins Head Coach Joe Philbin. “We also start our season with two division opponents, travel to London and finish the year with two home games. As always, our off-season program and training camp will be paramount in preparing us for the upcoming season.”
The Dolphins will return home to Sun Life Stadium in Week Three to face the Kansas City Chiefs on September 21 at 4:25 pm. Miami will then travel across the water to participate in the London International Series where they will face the Oakland Raiders at 6:00 p.m., September 28 at Wembley Stadium.
Following the team’s sixth consecutive October bye week during Week Five (October 5), the Dolphins will face its first NFC opponent of the 2014 schedule as the Green Bay Packers travel to Miami to face off on October 12 at 1:00 p.m. Miami will face its second consecutive NFC North foe when they visit Chicago at 1:00 p.m., October 19 to face the Bears. The remaining contest in October will see the Dolphins face the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road at 1:00 p.m., October 26.
The Dolphins begin November at home against the San Diego Chargers at 1:00 p.m., November 2, followed by a road game at Detroit at 1:00 p.m., November 9. Miami will then play two nationally televised games in three contests when they host Buffalo in a Thursday night tilt at 8:30 p.m., November 13 at Sun Life Stadium (NFL Network) and travel to New York to play the Jets at 8:25 p.m. Monday, December 1 (Monday Night Football). In between the two night games, the Dolphins will travel to Denver to face the AFC Champion Broncos at 4:25 p.m., November 23.
The December portion of the schedule finds the Dolphins at home against the Baltimore Ravens at 1:00 p.m., December 7, followed by a visit to New England to face the Patriots at 1:00 p.m., December 14. The final two games are home contests, 1:00 p.m., December 21 vs. the Minnesota Viking before closing out the 2014 regular season against the New York Jets for the second consecutive time at 1:00 p.m. December 28.
For the first time, flexible scheduling may be applied in Weeks 5-10. During that period, flexible scheduling can be used in no more than two weeks by shifting a Sunday afternoon game into primetime and moving the Sunday night game to an afternoon start time. Also, for the first time, a select number of games are being “cross-flexed,” moving between CBS and FOX to bring potentially under-distributed games to wider audiences.
“Flexible scheduling” will be used in Weeks 11-17 as it has been in recent years. In Weeks 11-16, the schedule lists the games tentatively set for Sunday Night Football on NBC. Only Sunday afternoon games are eligible to be moved to Sunday night, in which case the tentatively scheduled Sunday night game would be moved to an afternoon start time. Flexible scheduling will not be applied to games airing on Thursday, Saturday or Monday nights. A flexible scheduling move would be announced at least 12 days before the game. For Week 17, the Sunday night game will be announced no later than six days prior to December 28. The schedule does not list a Sunday night game in Week 17, but an afternoon game with playoff implications will be moved to that time slot. Flexible scheduling ensures quality matchups in all Sunday time slots in those weeks and gives “surprise” teams a chance to play their way into primetime.
