DeSean Jackson, fresh off of signing a five-year, $51 million contract to stay in Philadelphia, is feeling good about the Eagles, and not afraid to make some bold predictions. He was smart enough to be a little hazy on the timeline, though, as he guaranteed a Super Bowl somewhere during his new contract.
“I’m just happy to still be here,” Jackson said following the announcement of his five-year deal. “In one of those years, I’m going to guarantee a Super Bowl. We’ve been so close since I’ve been here the past four years. …The sky’s the limit.”
Last season in Philadelphia was disappointing, as one of the most talented rosters in the league finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs. They also spent endless press conferences trying to distance themselves from the “Dream Team” sobriquet that Vince Young hung on the team, which became an albatross around their neck.
Jackson is saying all the right things, though. His enthusiasm is obvious, and he’s happy about his new contract and the chances that the team has. And the goal for every team is a Super Bowl title. And with his talent, setting the Hall of Fame has a long term goal can’t hurt, either, although he’s still very early in his career to be worried about that.
“Hands down I think we’re one of the best teams in the NFL,” Jackson added. “I want to shoot for the Hall of Fame. I want to shoot for Super Bowls. That’s something I haven’t done yet.”
“Last year was last year. Regardless of the stats and the numbers I put up, I still felt I wasn’t too far off with my average per year and all that,” Jackson added. “Even when everyone else can say it’s a bad year, I was still 40 yards from 1,000. I don’t really like to get caught up in that stuff. I still want to go out and play with the edge that I’m still the best receiver in the NFL.”
Vince Young could take a lesson – set lofty goals, but stay flexible on the time frame. And avoid a snappy, rhyming nickname that could be thrown in your face later.
