The Dallas Cowboys signed free agent quarterback Brandon Weeden on Monday. Weeden, a third-year veteran, was drafted in the first round (22nd overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. Before entering the NFL and finishing his collegiate football career, Weeden was the first player chosen by the New York Yankees in the second round (71st overall) of the 2002 MLB Draft.
In 2013 Weeden started five of the eight games he played and threw for 1,731 yards, nine touchdowns and nine interceptions on 141-of-267 attempts.
As an NFL rookie in 2012, Weeden started all 15 games he played and completed 297-of-517 passes for 3,385 yards with 14 touchdowns and 17 interceptions for the Browns. He also finished third on the team with 111 rushing yards. His 3,385 passing yards were a Browns rookie record, the seventh-highest figure by an NFL rookie and 10th in a season in Browns history.
Weeden started the final 26 games of his 30-game career at Oklahoma State (2008-11), completing 767-of-1,103 passes for 9,260 yards and 75 touchdowns. His yardage and touchdown totals were both school records.
Prior to playing at Oklahoma State, Weeden’s professional baseball career spanned from 2002-06 as a pitcher, playing in the farm systems of the New York Yankees (2002-03), Los Angeles Dodgers (2004-05) and Kansas City Royals (2006). He finished his baseball career with a 19-26 record in 65 starts. He had an ERA of 5.02 in 374.1 innings pitched.
A native of Edmond, Okla., Weeden was an all-state selection in football, baseball and basketball at Sante Fe High School.
