Chiefs Hire Childress to Guide the Offense

Almost three months after Andy Reid took over as Chiefs head coach, he was able to hire Brad Childress as a senior offensive assistant, Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star reports.

Childress, 56, was Reid’s offensive coordinator and/or quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999 through 2005. He then left to become the head coach for the Minnesota Vikings, where he had a 39-35 record and won two NFC Central championships.

He was fired by the Vikings after 4 1/2 seasons.

Childress was out of football in 2011 and returned last season as offensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns.

Reid has said he will call the offensive plays, at least initially. Otherwise, the Chiefs have a first-year offensive coordinator in Doug Pederson, so Reid will rely on the experience of Childress to help guide the offense.
