New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson announced today that the team is close to signing QB Drew Breed to a long term contract. Speaking from a press conference where he announced he had purchased the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets, Benson said that he talked to Brees this morning and that the two are “close” to working out a new deal.
The Saints begin voluntary team workouts on Monday and Brees isn’t expected to attend without a new deal a source close to Brees told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Benson was optimistic in saying, “He is due in next week.”
It has been a busy week for the Saints organization. On Monday, it was announced that the suspensions of coach Sean Payton, general manager Mickey Loomis, and assistant head coach Joe Vitt had been upheld by commissioner Goodell. Then yesterday the team announced that Vitt would act as the interim coach when Payton’s suspension begins on Monday. The team has yet to announce who will take over for Vitt when he is suspended for the first six weeks of the regular season.
Brees said in an email to the associated press that Vitt was “the obvious choice” to take over for Payton during his suspension.
