The Buffalo Bills have announced that they have elected not to use an $8.433 million tag option on free safety Jairus Byrd.
Bills GM Doug Whaley said, “We have negotiated with representation for Jairus Byrd for more than a year, but have yet to reach an agreement on a contract extension. We remain open to getting a deal done with Jairus, but we have chosen not to use the franchise tag on any of our impending unrestricted free agents.”
Unless the two sides can come to an agreement on Byrd’s value in the next eight days, Byrd will hit the open market.
Byrd, 27, will be one of the hottest names on the free-agent market if he’s not under contract by March 11.
