WACO, Tex.— Kendall Wright is a projected first-round draft pick after completing his collegiate career as the most prolific receiver in Baylor history. He set or tied 16 school records in his four-year career and caught at least one pass in all 50 games with the Bears. The first-team All-Big 12 and first-team All-American selection held a media availability session following his Pro Day this week, when he discussed playing with Robert Griffin III, turning some heads at Pro Day and the state of the Baylor football program.
On his main focus for the day …
“I thought it went pretty good. I wasn’t really worried about my routes or catching because Robert and I have always worked on that. All I was worried about was running a good 40 time. Obviously everyone thought that I ran a 4.6, but I’m pretty sure that I haven’t run that since fifth grade.” [NB: Wright was clocked at 4.44 and 4.47 at his Pro Day.]
On the goal he had coming into Baylor with Robert Griffin III …
“All we thought about was coming into this program and trying to change it. That’s all we’ve wanted to do the whole time. I feel like we did a good job at that.”
On Baylor’s overall athletic success …
“It’s crazy. All the sports here are doing great things. It’s amazing that you have Robert (Griffin III) winning the Heisman, Brittney Griner dunking on people and Perry Jones III playing well. You also have both teams in the Sweet 16. It’s a great time to be at Baylor University.”
On assessing his skills as a blocker …
“I can block. We didn’t do much on our run plays because we had pass routes. I feel good about blocking, though. I can block, cut block, stop block and any type of block. We just didn’t do much of it, but I can do it.”
On his one-handed catch at Wednesday’s Pro Day …
“The ball initially looked like it was overthrown. We had already missed on one deep ball, so I wasn’t about to allow another one to get away. I just stuck out my hand and caught the ball. I don’t have really big hands, but if I get my hands on it I will always try to catch it.”
On how Baylor has prepared him for the NFL …
“They’ve prepared me for everything. That’s the main reason why I didn’t go anywhere else to continue training. I felt that if Baylor has gotten me this far, why stop now? I didn’t want to go anywhere else to train. Baylor has helped me with everything as far as my receiving skills and strength with Coach Kaz (Kazadi).”
