Rainbows and Tennis

Rainbow on skyBy: Betsy Tacchella

The weather was threatening rain that evening but my daughter, Kim, and I were determined to play some tennis. We headed to her local high school courts as heavy black clouds loomed overhead. When it began to sprinkle, our spirits were not daunted. We prayed it would clear quickly so we could get in a couple of sets.

Within minutes, not only did the misty rain stop but the courts were dry. As we proceeded with our tennis game, a rainbow of soft colors appeared and seemed to arc over the tennis court. It was so close and overshadowing that there were times we had to stop the match to gaze at its beauty.

Both of us were reminded of God’s favor in our lives, how we are in a covenant relationship with Him and that He is a God of promises. We sensed His presence in a special way as we continued to hit the ball back and forth. I pictured Him observing our game, delighting in the fun we were enjoying as mother and daughter.

God loves watching His children just as we enjoy watching our children and grandchildren play. Don’t you think so? I’m reminded of a word study I once did on the words ‘delight’ and ‘pleasure.’ One of the verses was Ps. 149:4, “For the Lord takes pleasure in His people….” I believe that God looks down on us every day and is filled with pleasure and delight at His creation.

His rainbow that night was no accident. It was a reminder that, safely held in His loving arms, we can know that we were created to bring Him pleasure. Rev. 4:11says, “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” Kim and I will not soon forget that evening of tennis where God used a rainbow in such a unique way.
