Former New York Jets guard Brandon Moore announced Thursday that he is planning to retire from the NFL.
Moore was the epitome of consistency throughout his 10 seasons in the NFL. The league recognized his solid play when Moore was elected to the pro-bowl in 2011. He started all 16 games for the Jets last season, but due to a poor free agent market, Moore has decided to retire at only age 33.
While there are many teams who would appreciate the services that Moore has to offer, no team was willing to give up big money to bring him aboard. Moore met with both the Lions and Dolphins this offseason, but neither team offered a deal that enticed him.
Moore’s announcement comes as a bit of a surprise considering that from a football perspective, Moore appears to be at the top of his game. His retirement is just another reminder of how unpredictable the business side of the NFL can be at times. Jets fans especially will miss Moore’s strong run blocking skills, and solid pass protection.
With the business aspect in mind, an important thing to consider is whether or not Moore may be bluffing about his retirement. We will have to wait and see in the coming days whether a big offer from a team changes his mind, or if Brandon Moore is serious about hanging up the pads for good.
