Over the past weekend, it was once again time for a great American tradition in sports: The Indianapolis 500. For over 100 years, Indianapolis Motor Speedway has been an iconic location for all different forms of racing. One of the other traditions of Indianapolis 500 race is the celebratory pace car. For over a decade, Chevrolet has presented Indianapolis Motor speedway with a stylish and sporty pace car. This year Chevy put forth their Corvette Stingray model. It is a prestigious honor to drive the Indy 500 pace car. Names like Robin Roberts, Patrick Dempsey and Chef Guy Fieri have all had the privilege of driving the pace car. This year San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh was selected as the newest member of the pace car drivers club.
When asked about how much practice time he received driving, Harbaugh said “I got a little bit of practice, yeah. [Former U.S. automobile racer] Johnny Rutherford, the great Johnny Rutherford was teaching me. And then I got probably about 10 or 15 laps the day before, practice on it.” Harbaugh work all weekend with three-time Indy 500 winner Johnny Rutherford. Rutherford drove the pace car during the caution flags.
Harbaugh’s busy weekend continued when his brother-in-law, University of Indiana coach Tom Creen, scored tickets to game 3 of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals between the Miami Heat and the hometown Indiana Pacers.
For offseason workouts for Coach Harbaugh. Newly acquired wide receiver Anquan Boldin practiced and Coach Harbaugh was pleased with what he saw from his new offensive weapon.
“Well, very impressed. You got a good look at what he’s been doing. Really picked up the system fast and making plays. Big catches in tight areas. You saw what we’ve been seeing for a couple of weeks now, very good.”
With the recent injury to star wide receiver Michael Crabtree, the 49ers will have to rely on the veteran Boldin as well as others to fill the void. For starters Harbaugh has divided up the young receivers and the more experience ones into two different positions, the X and Z receiver spots. A.J. Jenkins, Quinton Patton and Ricardo Lockette will be at the X position while Boldin, Marlon Moore, Chad Hall and Joe Hastings will be running plays from the Z or strong side wide receiver position.
The wide receiver conundrum was one of a few football related issues that Harbaugh was able to escape this past weekend. Taking time away from the game to enjoy yourself is something that coaches really look forward to and enjoy. And hey, Jim Harbaugh finally got to see a yellow flag in the air on this past Sunday. But if you ask the coach, it’s a couple Sundays too late.
