Santonio Holmes: Sanchez is the Jets’ Guy

Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes has had his fair share of grievances with the Jet’s QB, Mark Sanchez. Despite their rocky history, Holmes has publicly given his endorsement for Sanchez to start in New York.

“Right now, it’s Sanchez, and that’s who we’re going with, and we’re going to continue on this road until time permits,” Holmes said on the NBC Sports Network. When asked if Sanchez believes he’s the starter, Holmes said the quarterback is focusing on “being Mark Sanchez, the team leader.”

It’s not as if Holmes really had any other choice than to defend his teammate; he has not played a game with any of the three other quarterbacks on the roster. He missed a bulk of the 2012 season due to a Lisfranc foot injury that led to season-ending surgery.

With an impending QB battle this pre-season, it will be interesting to which player stands above the rest. Currently, the signal callers on the roster include Sanchez, David Garrard, Greg McElroy, Matt Sims, and rookie Geno Smith.

Of course, what press conference would be complete without the mention of Tim Tebow? Holmes smartly avoided those questions by stating “it would be unfair for me to comment since I didn’t play with him this season.”

Luckily for Holmes, the team has decided to move away from the dual-QB offense, an offense that Holmes has been skeptical of dating back to last season. After the team brought in Tim Tebow last season, Holmes questioned the success of running a two-QB system effectively. As it turns out he was right.

The Jets have plenty of issues that need addressing in 2013, the biggest being their offensive production. The receiving corps specifically tails off after Holmes’ spot on the depth chart. Holmes has dedicated himself to helping the Jet’s cause in the form of a $3.5 million pay-cut.

“I want to be here for the long term, and if it means helping out the team, I’m going to continue helping out the team in any way possible,” Holmes said.

New York’s top receiver continues to rehab his foot injury, while also taking some courses at his former college, “The” Ohio State University. He continues to get his health back on track to start in week 1 for Gang Green; a meeting that Holmes will see his former teammate, Darrelle Revis, covering him.
