Fans rose to their feet as former Lions great and Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders took the stage to announce the fifth overall pick in the NFL Draft. Fans chanted “Barry!” “Barry! and rose to a standing ovation.
Detroit undoubtedly missed out the on the offensive lineman parade; it was one of their biggest positions of need headed into the 2013 season. Still, they got a nice backup plan with their 2013 draft selection.
The Lions elected to go with Ezekial “Ziggy” Ansah.
Detroit surprised no one by picking Ansah, and the crowd appeared as if they almost expected the pick.
Ansah will now play alongside Ndamukong Suh in the Motor City. The BYU prospect was one of the more intriguing players in the draft. The African native has not been playing football very long, but has mesmerizing, if not freakish, athleticism. Only time will tell if the athletic rookie will make a name for himself at the next level, but for now, the pick appears to be solid.
