The tragic bombings set off during the Boston Marathon Monday dominated the headlines. The horrific incident, which left three dead and injured hundreds more, halted all major activity in Boston and the surrounding areas. Though the event is sure to be remembered as a major disaster, one of the Boston areas newest residents is doing his best to ease the minds of the victims and their families.
Danny Amendola, a former St. Louis Ram, made his first big splash this off-season, nowhere near the football field where he makes his biggest impact. For a guy with little to no ties with the New England area, Amendola is sure to become a fan-favorite almost immediately after his latest announcement via social media.
Fittingly, the newest Patriot stepped up and took initiative on what is marked on the calendar as, “Patriot’s Day.” The newest Pats receiver tweeted that he is pledging money to go to any future relief that will be provided to the victims and family members affected by the tragedy at the historic race.
Danny Amendola is a productive receiver in the NFL, when healthy. Still, in seasons where he has played in at least ten games, Amendola averages 64 passes caught. The man he replaced in New England, Welker, averaged nearly 100.
With major injuries to Rob Gronkowski, and Aaron Hernandez’ health questions, it is not out of the question to expect Amendola to produce at a high level this season. Should Amendola stay healthy, he projects to catch around 75 or so passes from Tom Brady in 2013.
Regardless of how Amendola and the Patriots fare this season, it is a great gesture by a player making a fresh start in a new city. Needless to say, Tom Brady and the New England faithful will be hoping to get a solid performance by Danny Amendola this season.
