Former third-round pick Colt McCoy was drafted in 2010 to be the “quarterback of the future.” Instead, the former Texas Longhorn wound up on the list of Browns quarterback that hasn’t lived up to expectations. McCoy is just another name on the long laundry list of failed quarterbacks dating back to before the millennium. Such names include Tim Couch, Kelly Holcomb, Charlie Frye, Derek Anderson, and Brady Quinn.
With the arrival of Jason Campbell, it would appear as if the team seems to finally start planning to move on from the Colt McCoy era. There had been speculation that the team was looking to move McCoy dating back to as early as the drafting of a fellow Big 12 QB Brandon Weeden. Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer has suggested the team is looking to release or trade him for a late-round pick soon.”
McCoy is simply another casualty of playing for the mediocre Browns. Cleveland has had very little success in the AFC North, a division that ranks among one of the toughest and most physical in all of football. With no offensive weapons at his disposal, McCoy seemingly never stood a chance. Cleveland has gone just 6-15 in games McCoy has started under center.
Campbell, who is expected to compete with Brandon Weeden for the starting role, will turn 32 this season. His will square off with a 30-year-old quarterback entering his sophomore season in the NFL. The former baseball player did not start his football career with the Oklahoma State Cowboys until 2008.
For now, the Browns appear to be exhausting every opportunity to receive some type of payout for their failed draft selection before they simply cut ties with him. It would be surprising if a team would be willing to give up anything in terms of compensation due to the abundance of backups available on the market.
Cleveland may have found a decent starting option for now, but with both quarterbacks on the wrong side of 30, it may seem that the team could use an insurance plan. Don’t be surprised if the Browns take a young player in the later round of the draft. Quality players like Jordan Rodgers, Zac Dysert, and Alex Carder could be impact players that slip to day three of the draft.
