Washington Redskins defensive captain London Fletcher will undergo left ankle surgery today. Later in March, Fletcher will have elbow surgery.
Fletcher, 37, told CBS Washington’s David Elfin that he will have these surgeries so he can come back healthy for 2013. “Surgery is the first step towards prepping for next season,” Fletcher said.
This will be Fletcher’s 16th season, after receiving his third consecutive pro bowl nod. However, the Redskins are still left in an interesting situation. With an impending $18 million cap penalty heading into free agency at 4 p.m., March 12th, Washington has to make some tough decisions. And one of them could or would have been London Fletcher.
While he’s received pro bowl nods, his play on-the-field has declined. He’s clearly not the same player.
Fletcher is $6.2 million against the cap if he plays and $2.8 million if he doesn’t. As we talked about in our off-season forecast London could be released. But the news of surgery kind of shakes things up a little bit. This leaves a ton of question marks that the Redskins will have to answer.
