DJ Harper came to Boise State inspired by a chance to match or even exceed to the heroics of Ian Johnson. At the time he came to the campus he was one of the mist highly touted recruits in the school’s history and was the fastest player in the program. As a freshman Harper’s promise and talent were on display as he produced 376 yards in limited duty. In 2009 his touches were again limited, but he remained patient as all indications were that the next year was to be his year. So impressive was he in spring football that Doug Martin, his primary competition at running back was moved to nickel back
DJ Harper had a strong start in his junior campaign with 284 yards in the first three games, unfortunately in that third game against Fresno State he tore his ACL, ending his season. When asked what kept him going he said, “Simple, love of the game.” Doug Martin emerged while Harper was awarded a medical redshirt. After a grueling rehab he came back ready to play in 2011 and he fought his way back up the depth chart. As the 2nd string back he had 139 yards on just 15 carries and scored two touchdowns.
In the third game against Oregon State he again suffered a season-ending ACL tear, when asked to explain how he dealt with such a cruel turn of events Harper offered this, “God has a plan for me and everything happens for a reason. I am a much stronger person mentally and physically after what I have been through” When pressed as to if he lost anything after two knee surgeries he seemed to dismiss the notion, “I can do everything I could do before and more, I have better strength and I feel like I am just as explosive.”
When asked about how he might handle being a third down back at the next level, “Third down back plays into my strengths in our offense I had to catch the ball and pick up blitzes, I am used to a complex offense. He made it clear he was very proud of his class: Doug Martin, Shea McClellin, Kellen Moore, Austin Pettis, Billy Wynn and Titus Young. He is planning to attend McClellin’s wedding and he quickly rose to defend his former teammate Titus Young. “Titus is a really good person and he has always wanted to be the best, he has so much talent. I think he gets frustrated and he doesn’t always say what he means or handle things the right way.”
When asked about playing special teams he made clear he’s not a diva at all, “I just want an opportunity. I’ll do whatever, kickoff, punt I’ll gun.” If DJ Harper can fully recover the exceptional speed he wants had and with the maturity, toughness and tenacity he has won through dealing with so many hard situations it’s hard to imagine him not finding a way to succeed in the NFL.
