Some thought the Browns would go after a big name coach to create a big splash such as Chip Kelly or Nick Saban. Instead the Browns hired have surprised many by hiring Panthers Offensive Coordinator Rob Chudzinksi as their new Head Coach.
Chudzinksi interviewed with the team earlier in the week but wasn’t viewed as the favorite. However, his interview must have been impressive enough for Browns new owner Jimmy Haslam and Browns CEO Joe Banner.
But a closer look should tell you that Chudzinksi’s hire shouldn’t really come as a surprise. Chudzinski has been with the Browns before, starting in 2004 as the tight ends coach and again in 2007 and 2008 as the team’s offensive coordinator. Under his watch the Browns went 10-6 in 2007, their most wins since 1994 and narrowing missing the playoffs. That year, he led Derek Anderson to a career year in which he made the Pro Bowl, throwing for 29 touchdowns, including throwing five in his first start in Week 2 in a wild 51-45 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.
He experienced great success as well with Cam Newton for the Carolina Panthers.
The other thing that shouldn’t come as a surprise is Jimmy Haslam came from and wants to model his franchise like the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mike Tomlin’s hire as the Steelers head coach was also seen as a surprise by many.
Browns CEO Joe Banner has previously stated that he wants the Browns to maintain consistency like the Eagles and Steelers have experienced over the years and hopes this hire will be for the long term.
Despite the Browns suffering another losing season at 5-11, they are a team with many core pieces in place and look to be headed in the right direction. Hopefully, the new changes in the front office will help reflect the talent on the field.
