Thanks to a 10-year-old boy from Fox Chapel, Pa., William “The Refrigerator” Perry is once again wearing his 1985 Super Bowl ring. The boy, Cliff Forrest, took $8,500 of his college savings to buy the Super Bowl ring in New York. Forrest commented, “He only played in one Super Bowl. I thought he would want it more than I did.”
Perry is currently battling Guillain-Barre syndrome, a disease that attacks the nervous system and can cause paralysis. Perry gave the boy two autographed jerseys in return. He told reporters about his health, “I’m up and moving around. I’m doing what I like to do best – fishing.”
Forrest’s parents were reluctant when they first heard their son’s plan but eventually relented. The family took a flight to Chicago to deliver the ring to Perry themselves.
Perry played 10 seasons in the NFL. The lineman and occasional goal-line running back became a national celebrity during his rookie season with Chicago in 1985, helping the Bears to a Super Bowl title.
