During the 2012 NFL draft, there were rumblings the New York Giants had Boise State running back Doug Martin ranked number one on the their draft board. The Buccaneers, however, took Martin 31st overall, and with the 32nd pick the New York Giants selected running back David Wilson out of Virginia Tech. In an instance, the two were linked forever.
Doug Martin, aka “the muscle hamster,” has set the NFL on fire with his 794 yards rushing on 154 attempts. His 135-yard performance verse the Vikings coupled with a 251-yard game against the Raiders has Martin’s name in early rookie of the year discussions.
Wilson, on the other hand, has been used predominately as a kick returner for the Giants and has only 17 carries form the backfield on the season thus far.
Wilson is aware of Martin’s success, but isn’t envious of his fellow rookie, ESPN.com reports.
“Him getting his carries on his team is him. So just cause he does something it’s not going to make me be like ‘I want to be like Doug Martin,’ ” Wilson said. “He wants to be a great football player, I want to be a great football player and I hope everybody on this team wants to be great at their position. That’s when championships are won.
Wilson also spoke about his role with the Giants.
“You have to work hard and play your role and know what you go to do, and right now I’ve been doing that and working hard and playing my part on the team. Whatever they ask me to do, I’m ready to do.”
Doug Martin’s 251-yard, four-touchdown performance against the Raiders hasn’t gone unnoticed by Wilson.
“Congratulations to him,” Wilson said. “That’s amazing to come in and have that great of an impact on the team. I was very happy for him.”
