Giants Also Targeted Williams

In audio files that were made public Thursday, former New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator instructed his defense prior to their divisional round game against the San Francisco 49ers to go after 49ers wide receiver Kyle Williams head. Now, it is being pointed out that the New York Giants did the same thing the following week in the NFC Championship game.

In comments after the game both linebacker Jacquian Williams and wide receiver Devin Thomas stated that Williams was indeed a target.

“The thing is, we knew he had four concussions, so that was our biggest thing, was to take him outta the game,” Williams told NYMag.com after the game.

Not only was the special teams targeting Williams’ head, they may have accomplished just that.

“He’s had a lot of concussions,” Thomas told the Star-Ledger columnist Steve Politi. “We were just like, ‘We gotta put a hit on that guy.’ … [Giants reserve safety Tyler] Sash did a great job hitting him early and he looked kind of dazed when he got up. I feel like that made a difference and he coughed it up.”

That pretty much shows that Gregg Williams comments that were made public is nothing new in football and is common place as players with a history of concussions are strategic targets for turnovers,
