Manningham Joins 49ers, Now Who Will Throw Him the Ball?

What was once the San Francisco 49ers weakest link on offense is quickly becoming Miami Heat-esque.

The 49ers have agreed to a 2-year contract with former NY Giants wideout Mario Manningham.

With the signing, Manningham joins a WR group that already includes future Hall of Famer Randy Moss and former 10thoverall pick Michael Crabtree.

“This is a sick WR squad. It’s going to be crazy on the Offensive side of the ball,” tweeted defensive lineman Ricky Jean-Francois.

His departure from New York isn’t all that surprising though. The Giants already have two big-time receivers in Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz, and weren’t looking to pay Manningham what he was looking for.

Last season, Manningham finished with 39 receptions for 523 yards and four touchdowns in 12 regular-season games. But he came up big in the Giants’ Super Bowl run, catching three touchdowns — including one against the Niners — in the postseason and had five receptions for 73 yards against the Patriots, including his sensational 38-yard fourth-quarter catch that set up the game-winning touchdown.

When asked if he considers himself a top receiver in the league, Manningham answered, “Yeah. It’s a business. You got to look at it like that too. Their (the Giants) decision might come down to … you never know. You got to look out for your family. That is how it is.”

Now that Peyton Manning has decided to go with the Denver Broncos, the 49ers are still working on figuring out who their starter will be for next season.
