The San Francisco 49ers have signed veteran wide receiver Randy Moss, according to a team source.
The 35-year-old Moss worked out for the 49ers on Monday, and agreed to a deal practically moments afterward. He was catching passes from current Head Coach of the Year Jim Harbaugh, as league rules stipulate that a quarterback cannot participate in team workouts until the league year officially starts on Tuesday at 4pm ET.
The signing gives the 49ers a sorely needed upgrade at wide receiver. They haven’t had a Pro Bowl caliber player at the position since Terrell Owens left in 2003.
“We need someone to stretch the field,” 49ers CEO Jed York said. Moss could be exactly what they need, as he has made a career out big-time catches and destroying opposing cornerbacks.
Moss will likely be on a short leash, as the deal was only for one year. If he doesn’t perform up to Harbaugh’s new standards, he could find himself in the same boat as Braylon Edwards, who the 49ers released prior to last year’s playoffs.
Moss was part of the 2007 New England Patriots team that went 18-0 but ultimately fell in the Super Bowl. His 153 TD receptions are tied for 2nd all time with Terrell Owens, trailing only the great Jerry Rice.
With the signing, the top 3 wide receivers all time in terms of total touchdowns (Rice, Owens, Moss) have played for San Francisco.
