In what has seemed to be a foregone conclusion, Alex Smith and the San Francisco 49ers are working on a new deal in the wake of his performance under the 1-year contract he signed last offseason. Both Smith and coach Jim Harbaugh seem intent on making it happen, and neither side has shown a desire to go elsewhere.
“It will get done,” Smith said. “It’s just a process. It takes some time.”
Smith seems determined to stay, and has been seen golfing with (and even caddying for) Harbaugh in the offseason. The 49ers expressed no interest in pursuing Peyton Manning, further showing that they were committed to the Smith path.
Apparently, the impasse is currently over the length of the contract, but both sides seem intent on getting it done. If they aren’t able to get a deal done soon, Smith could test the free agent waters, but with Manning and Flynn still floating around, it’s a confusing time for free agent quarterbacks.
This is one to watch over the next couple of weeks, but it seems unlikely that either side will be walking away.
