Perspective – The faculty of seeing a whole of relevant data in meaningful relationship. Or simply put, Perspective is the way in which you see things. This term carries significant weight when fully examined. Take for example these popular discussions: Is the glass half empty or half full? Are you working to live or living to work? Or my personal favorite, do you eat to live or simply live to eat? In the year and a half since my retirement, I have found that my perspective on life has changed significantly.
A former NFL Lineman, son of a nine year NFL veteran, public school and Big 10 university educated, husband and father of one, and a Christian man; that really sums up the perspective from which I write. I was raised in a household where SportsCenter was on TV more often than Sesame Street and my classroom for life was always an athletic field. Therefore, trading in a playbook and a helmet for some textbooks and a Bible has been an interesting shift. People often inquire, “Why would you ever want to do that?” I’m glad they ask…
I think the most important distinction in life is to understand who you are; what truly defines you? For me, I had always understood myself to be a Christian who played Football instead of a Football Player who was a Christian. The order of my identity was vital. In choosing to exit the NFL, I did so for the purpose of growing deeper in my understanding of who I am and what I believe. A fair question I think. Interestingly enough, in my discussion with people about my decision, I’ve found that many people seldom think about that subject. Who am I? What’s true? What do I stand for? These can be difficult questions to answer.
I have found that I am passionate about presenting this challenge to people. The challenge of defining who you are and counting the cost of what you believe. In beginning this project with Pro Player Insiders, this perhaps is my overarching goal. My hope is to bring some critical thought into many of the issues that we tend to only give a glance towards.
I look forward to commenting on NFL news and stories, current events in the world and even share some behind the scenes perspective of what life in the NFL is really like. I was fortunate to fill all kinds of roles in my playing career; from back up to starter to not even dressing on Sundays, I did it all. I’ll be posting quick thoughts, longer blogs and even fielding your questions, so be on the lookout for these things. Lastly, know that above all else, I have a heart for people. That being said, I am committed to extend a great deal of respect and grace to the issues and people I write about. After all, I’m nothing special, just a person like everyone else. I’m not a holy man, a priest, a pastor, or anywhere near perfect. I am, however, very excited for this opportunity and can’t wait to get started. Check back soon and see what I’m chewing on. I sincerely hope you’ll pull up a chair, take a bite, and start chewing too.
